3D-printing technology makes it possible to create holograms with an inkjet printer
A startup called Lumii has developed an algorithm with the help of which holographic portraits can be printed using usual Epson office printers.
The technology was demonstrated in California at Siggraph 2016, a computer graphics and interactive techniques conference.
First a potential holographic image is scanned with 3D technology. Then it is converted using special algorithms. Finally, two patterns are printed and layered one on top of the other.
The hologram effect is achieved by light fields and a parallax effect.
Several advertising and marketing agencies have already taken an interest in the project.

Some companies are going to use the holographic technology to print billboards and roll-ups. Lumii is planning to create cheap and qualitative hologram images using generally available equipment.
