Laika releases Boxtrolls models to let fans 3D print their own at home

The Portland based animation studio LAIKA, makers of Coraline and Paranorman, is coming out with a new stop motion animated feature in 2014 called 'The Boxtrolls', a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses.

The Boxtrolls is a 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature based on Alan Snow's bestselling fantasy adventure novel Here Be Monsters. The new movie will be released in the U.S. by Focus on September 26, 2014.

With all stop motion, you will need to have a set of templates pre-designed to be used for certain shots, which requires many man hours of patient and detail-oriented work. In the old days film makers had to hand sculpt and paint every facial appliance, but with the latest 3D printing technology the team was able to speed up the animation process and bring more life into their character.Laika has partnered with 3D Systems to use its ProJet 660Pro 3D printer to print the on-camera models. Laika takes advantage of incorporating their character's paint jobs into the printing process itself, allowing for a wider array of subtle expressions to be executed without jarring discrepancies.

To get in on the fun, Laika has also made available a suite of 3D printable files for fans to print their own Boxtrolls at home. Laika has release the files for the soon-to-be favorite characters: Shoe, Oil Can, Fragile and Fish, which can be downloaded for free and printed on your home printer or through Cubify's cloud printing service.
